🌺 A Blooming Tradition Since 1948
The NC Azalea Festival was first held in 1948 with one simple mission: to highlight Wilmington’s natural beauty, rich history, and emerging identity as a cultural destination. At the time, Wilmington was still recovering from the impacts of World War II, and community leaders saw the need for a unifying celebration that could draw people together—and draw attention to the region’s charm.
It worked.
With the support of local garden clubs, artists, and civic leaders, the first Azalea Festival included a parade, garden tours, and a coronation ceremony for the very first Azalea Queen. And just like that, a tradition was born.
Then & Now: How the Festival Has Grown
What began as a weekend gathering has since blossomed into one of the largest and most beloved festivals in the Southeast. Today, the NC Azalea Festival attracts over 300,000 people each year and spans several days of activities:
-
Parades & Pageantry: From the majestic coronation of the Azalea Queen to the fan-favorite Main Street Parade, tradition is still center stage.
-
Live Music & Big-Name Acts: National artists and rising stars perform each year at the Live Oak Bank Pavilion and other venues across town.
-
Garden Tours: Private gardens and historic estates open their gates, giving festivalgoers a rare glimpse into Wilmington’s Southern charm.
-
Art, Food, and Street Fairs: Downtown Wilmington becomes a bustling hub of local makers, live performances, and amazing eats.
-
Fireworks & Family Fun: From the waterfront to Greenfield Lake, there’s something for everyone.
A Symbol of Southern Hospitality
The azalea itself—a flower known for its vibrancy and resilience—has become a symbol of Wilmington. You’ll see it in bloom across our city’s gardens in April, but it also represents something deeper: tradition, growth, and connection to place. It’s no wonder that the festival has become such a strong expression of Wilmington’s identity.
Whether you're walking the historic district, catching a concert on the riverfront, or just sipping sweet tea on a porch, there’s something about Azalea Festival weekend that makes this place feel like home.
